Did You Know? 10/25

Hello hello!

DSDC here, and we are coming at you with another “Did you Know” fact about Swing Dance history!!!

Did you know…

In 1988, West Coast Swing was pronounced the Official State Dance of California.
West Coast Swing is a partner dance that focuses more on footwork.

Friday’s lesson was great! We are so glad that so many of your made it! We hope you can come to this week’s lesson. We will be teaching some smooth moves.

Did you know…

“Swing Kids” is a 1993 film staring Christian Bale and Robert Sean Leonard. In the film, a close group of friends rebel against the pro-Nazi youth league called “Hitlerjugend” or “Hitler Youth” by listening and dancing to banned American Swing.Swing had become an underground movement as the Nazi’s tightened their grip on German youth.

Did you know…

East Coast Swing evolved from the Lindy Hop with some work from Arthur Murray dance studios in the 1940s.  East Coast Swing also has a few different names throughout the US and Internationally:

  • Eastern Swing
  • Jitterbug
  • American Swing
  • East Coast Lindy (Not Lindy Hop)
  • Triple Swing

Did you know? 8-20-11

Hello hello out there!

DSDC here coming at you with another “Did you Know” fact about Swing Dance history!!!

Did you know…

In the 1930s some of the famous dances were:

  • Balboa: which is a close embracing quick footwork dance which was typically performed as a ballroom dance
  • Lindy Hop: which is an 8-count dance which evolved in a period between the late 20s and early 30s
  • Collegiate Shag: which was named to attract the youth to dance halls in the 30′s in New York. It is performed with a 2-beat rhythm.

Our First “Did you know?”

Hello to all of you Swing lovers out there!

This is our first “Did you know” blog posting for the 2011-2012 school year! Be on the look out for weekly (and maybe even daily) Did you know trivia and swing facts!

So.. without further ado…

Did you know

…Benny Goodman, a renowned clarinet player, was denoted as the “King of Swing” (a tittle invented by Gene Krupa, a jazz drummer and musician)? He reigned as the King until is death in 1986 at the age of 77!
